The clients for this project were young professionals who had purchased a home to accommodate needs for their growing family. They sought to create more functional and enjoyable spaces that could be shared with guests and asked us to bring their vision to life.
The first phase of the project focused on redesigning their existing mudroom. While enhancing storage capacity and preserving the room's everyday functionality, one side of the mudroom transformed into a versatile space for an espresso bar while the other became a bench area, providing a convenient spot for parents and children to sit and prepare for the day together.
The second phase involved re-envisioning the cellar space. To access the cellar, a hatch in the mudroom floor slides open to a wooden stair that descends below. One side of the cellar houses a built-in pantry, where produce and dry goods are kept. The other side of the cellar space features a smoothed concrete foundation wall, exposing the textures of concrete under a recessed light. To maintain air-flow, a natural ventilation system was added. The cellar also stores and showcases the clients’ wine collection. The cellar also serves as a storage space and functions as an inviting space for entertaining friends and family.
